A $100 giftcard for answering a few questions? I'll take it!

Posted Friday, January 11, 2008 (142 days 20 hours ago.)

I often recieve email notices from a couple of places asking me to participate their survey panels.  I don't mind doing this, these are reputable businesses.  At the end of most of the surveys there is a box to check if I want to be entered into a drawing.  Duh--of course I want to be entered into a drawing.  I am a female.  We like free stuff.

What I didn't expect was a UPS truck to pull up to our house this morning with a flat envelope addressed to me.  Inside was a letter announcing I was a winner of a $100 American Express gift card.  There are conditions listed so I read them expecting to see I was already eliminated.  Nope, I still have my gift card.  Then, there were a list of things I cannot do with the gift card.  It cannot be traded for money.  Oh, darn, I can't put it in savings.  I guess I will have to spend it.
I called my husband knowing there is some software that he would like to buy and offered the card to him.  Nope, I have to spend it on myself, he says.  Oh, darn.  I guess I am stuck with using the gift card.  Now, I really am pretty excited about this since, in the past, the only thing I can ever remember winning is a pair of bowling shoes.
I am going shopping now, but first, just one more check of my email.  I never know what might be in my "in box".

Santa's trademark "Ho Ho Ho" is offensive? Get real!

It seems a company in Australia has decided that Santa's signature line is offensive to women and could scare off the little tykes that visit him.  Westaff, a Santa recruitment firm is teaching their Santas a more politically correct "Ha ha ha" and in a softer tone, no less.
Get real!  A show of hands - how many of you females out there take Santa's greeting as a summation of your moral character?  Personally, I think anyone who does take that phrase to mean anything other than Santa's good cheer is entirely too sensitive and needs a life.
Westaff, lighten up!  What little kid climbing on Santa's lap to submit their Christmas morning wishes even knows what the slang term "ho" means?
After all that, the company has said they will leave the greeting to the Santa's discretion.  Good choice.

Stepping Out of my Comfort Zone

Posted Saturday, September 15, 2007 (260 days 10 hours ago.)

It seems as if everyone around me has a blog and always has something to talk about.  I usually don't talk a lot unless I feel strongly about something or am in a one-on-one conversation.  My husband and I brainstormed to come up with a pen name that I could live with, that hopefully doesn't sound too cheesy and will not become too outdated as techno-speak evolves. I don't consider myself a great writer, though, I do love to read and have a thing about correct spelling.
With all that said, I am taking a giant step out of my comfort zone.  Maybe those who read this and have taken this step will have some advice for me.  Maybe you are one who has joined the blogging ranks and has not known where to start.  I've heard this can be a lot like keeping a journal.  The jury is still out on that because my journal is much more private.  Maybe the reason this is a big step is that writing a blog makes one feel rather vulnerable and exposed. Or maybe I am paranoid.  Either way, I've jumped in with both hands on the keyboard and we will see where it leads.
