CINCINNATI – Legendary Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Conductor Erich Kunzel has been awarded a 2006 Medal of Arts by President George W. Bush. The National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the United States Government.

Ten medals will be presented by the President and Mrs. Laura Bush in an Oval Office ceremony at the White House. The National Endowment for the Arts manages the National Medal of Arts nomination process and notified the artists of their selection to receive a medal, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence.

Kunzel is currently conducting in Asia and will be unable to attend the November ceremony. He will receive a special presentation of his Medal at a private ceremony with the President in December. Kunzel released the following statement from Shenzhen, China:
“I am most grateful to President George W. Bush and the NEA for presenting me with a 2006 National Medal of Arts. Some 50 years ago I made my professional debut conducting at the Santa Fe Opera. Since that time, it has been my distinct honor as an American conductor to perform for millions of music lovers from Music Hall in Cincinnati to Carnegie Hall, from the San Francisco Opera to the Volksoper in Vienna, from the West Lawn of the U.S.Capitol to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Music is a universal language understood and enjoyed by peoples of all nations. I am proud to have been able to bring the music of America across the oceans and am humbled by this great honor."

“For his work to bring music to millions of people literally around the globe through his Cincinnati Pops recordings, tours and television programs, as well as his guest appearances, Erich Kunzel is richly deserving of this recognition," said Cincinnati Pops Orchestra President Steven Monder.

Erich Kunzel’s first conducting appearance with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, in October 1965, was a sold-out 8 O’Clock Pops concert at Music Hall. It was the beginning of a relationship with concert audiences the Cincinnati Enquirer described as “a musical love affair that works." When the CSO Board of Trustees officially established the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in 1977, Erich Kunzel was named the orchestra’s Conductor. He has since led the ensemble to unprecedented success with music lovers worldwide who have discovered the CPO through tour performances, television programs and best-selling Telarc recordings.

The National Medal of Arts, established by Congress in 1984, is awarded by the President to those who have made extraordinary contributions to the creation, growth, and support of the arts in the United States. Each year, the Arts Endowment seeks nominations from individuals and organizations across the country.  The National Council on the Arts, the Arts Endowment’s Presidentially-appointed and Senate-confirmed advisory body, reviews the nominations and provides recommendations to the President, who selects the recipients.
