Bad SantaBy buckeye(156) Today I wanted to feature one of my all time favorite movies, "Bad Santa." Now, I usually hate Christmas movies because they’re usually cheesy and about someone who’s a scrooge who in the end finds his Christmas spirit. But Bad Santa takes a slightly different approach. The protagonist is Willie played by Billy Bob Thornton. I don’t think this movie would have worked with anyone else. Willie’s character called for a drunken curse mouthed safe cracker (perfect for Billy Bob). Willie is a mall Santa Claus and his partner is an elf. Every year for Christmas the two of them pose as Santa and elf only to have the opportunity to infiltrate the mall security during closing on Christmas Eve. They steal hundreds of thousands of dollars each year; however on this Christmas they run into some trouble as a noisy security chief and a kid that mistakes Willie as the real Santa Claus get in the way. Here's a preview of a couple of the funniest scenes I've ever seen. These clips show you how much this movie doesn't follow the classic Christmas movies.
I highly recommend this outrageous comedy. The film works because it meshes genres of film. We have one genre of the jolly Christmas tale, but the other genre of the crime world. For me that’s a great method for success, meshing genres. Look at Fargo which I featured in my last blog; it meshed the comfort of the homely Midwest with the multiple homicide of the big city.
