Star WarsBy buckeye(156) I wanted to return to blogging about the best films of all-time. Now, I seem to be more of the sentimental movie watcher and I have my own personal favorites that are not on AFI’s list; however, in my defense I haven’t seen most of the films that are rated highly. I haven’t seen any of the “Godfather” movies nor have I seen “Casablanca,” “Gone with the Wind,” “Schindler’s List,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” or even “It’s a Wonderful Life.” For some, watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a Christmas tradition, but I guess I tend to be a nonconformist. It seems like everyone has seen it except for me and now I’ve made it a tradition to consciously avoid watching it. I guess I like it when people are astonished when they ask, “What? You’ve never seen it?” Ok, but there are some movies that are on here that I’ve seen and I'll have that astonished reaction when people tell me they’ve never seen it. For example, I’m amazed that there are people out there that have never seen the original “Star Wars.” Now, I’m not talking about Episode 1 which was released in 1999 (that movie is quite forgetful). I’m talking about the original original, the 1977 release of “Star Wars: A New Hope,” which is on AFI’s list at No. 15.
AFI recognized “Star Wars” for its original storytelling genre. As I’ve explained before, mixing genres can be a key ingredient in the success of a film. George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars universe, took such a basic story and ran with it. Think about it, have you ever heard of a story like this: the young man stuck on his childhood farm, he’s got big dreams for the future, but his family needs him on the farm for the upcoming harvest. Now, have him on a different planet where galactic forces intercede and the fate of the universe and a young princess is in his hands. “Star Wars” also took home a few Oscars for its revolutionary special effects, sound and music. Not to mention the amazing set, costume design and film editing. “Star Wars” amazed audiences in the theatres with its use of THX sound. Audiences would be astonished when they could literally see and hear a space shuttle fly over their heads. This Blog Post has been read 0 times.
