Holidays - Holidays – Holidays A Canine Guide to Upcoming Days Humans Celebrate

By BJChips(5,642) BJChips

If dogs had a holiday to celebrate of their own, I certainly hope we would be more sensible about it then humans are.

I’ve noticed that humans have many holidays they celebrate, almost every month there’s some special day marked on their calendars. I’ve also noticed that it doesn’t take much of an occasion for humans to declare a holiday either. Therefore, as we start the New Year I’d like to make you, my fellow canines, aware of some of the nutty holidays I’ve noticed on my human’s desk calendar. Here are some of the strangest.

January 3rd was Humiliation Day – now on first blush, it would appear that this is the day when you run around and humiliate as many people as you can. Not true, it is in fact exactly the opposite. On Humiliation Day, humans are actually suppose to celebrate NOT humiliating each other, and recognize the negativity of humiliating someone! Sure hope you didn’t miss out on this one my friends.

January 10 is Peculiar People Day, this is a day to honor uniquely different people. Un-ordinary, extraordinary, unusual, strange, odd, uncommon, intriguing, different, abnormal, and quirky.... These are all things that we think of to describe the word "peculiar".

January 14 is National Dress Up Your Pet Day – watch out for this one my friends. Now those nutty humans who like to dress us in Halloween costumes and knitted doggie sweaters have a National day in which to do it!

January also plays host to such weird holidays as National Nothing Day, and, Squirrel Appreciation Day, I personally plan to celebrate the later. Of course my view of how to appreciate those pesky squirrels in the backyard may not exactly live up to the true spirit the creators of this bizarre holiday had in mind… I wonder how they taste with catsup?

In February, humans celebrate that mushy day when they give each other flowers and candy called Valentines Day. All’s well and good I say. It’s nice to get overly lovey dovey once in awhile; even canines privately celebrate such a day. Nevertheless, I bet you didn’t know that February is also the month when humans celebrate National Toothache Day? How about National Do A Grouch A Favor day?

My personal favorite is on February the 22, when humans every where will celebrate Walking The Dog Day.Now it’s really not about walking us dogs, but, the origin was about celebrating a yo yo trick by the same name. Leave it to humans to celebrate a toy rather then their best friend, us!

Every four years, February ends with National Leap Year Day, a personal favorite of mine since it is also my birthday. On non leap years, I celebrate what I call quarter birthdays. For example, this year I’ll be collecting presents, and, eating cake for my three quarters birthday. Yes, it’s true, I won’t “officially” turn one until February 29, 2008!

Not having a birthday every year, also gives me an opportunity to double my celebration. Hey, it’s not my fault that my birthday lands between February 28 and March 1. I celebrate both days – double presents, double cake, double fun.

March has a number of silly human holidays as well, check these out.

March 1 – National Pig Day -? I’m not sure if you are supposed to celebrate eating them, or just having one around.

March 3 – If Pets Had Thumbs Day – Well, I’m all for that, sure would make it easier to play those video games I love if I had a thumb instead of a paw to hit the fire button!

March 12 – National Plant A Flower Day – Obviously, the creator of this holiday wasn’t thinking about people who live north of the Mason Dixon Line! Plant a flower on March 12 in Chicago, and pluck a frozen posy on March 13!

And finally, March 23 is National Chip and Dip day – Well, you know what I say to that my friends – please pass the Salsa and the Sour Cream…

I’ll update this list as the year goes on, somehow I have a feeling that we’ve got some exciting and silly celebrations coming up!

Until next time – Happy Blogging
