Laurel Ridge Ordinary 1795 Part IV

By beanerywriters(11,675)

Part IV of Foster’s piece, below, Laurel Ridge Ordinary 1795, was initially published in the Foothills Writers Group publication, Into the Foothills 2001. The first three parts are stored in the beanerywriters category under BW Visitor Writings.

Ruben crawled atop the lazy board of the wagon and Randolph mounted his horse while Elizabeth milled through a trunk of her goods. She fetched something in her hand and walked back toward the cabin with the object partially hidden in her dress.
"Kessiah, I would like to leave you with a parting gift. This hand glass was made in England. I want you to have it to remind you of the time we have shared and to show my appreciation for your hospitality. That was undoubtedly the finest venison I have ever tasted. You are a wonderful cook and gracious hostess. I know your ordinary will be anything but ordinary."
Kessiah stood in the snow, waving goodbye with Bedford clinging to her leg and Creed's arm around her. Mary Polly stood looking at herself in the only mirror she had ever seen. She rubbed the image on the glass and looked at the back of it to see where her face had gone.
The modern world seemed to move so fast. The travelers pulled out while Kessiah and Creed looked to the future and other visitors to their Laurel Ridge ordinary. Now, if only they could do something about that snow.

Rock Foster, Somerset, Pa., has authored two historical novels, When Gauley Ran Blood and On the Banks of Gauley. The books offer a life experience of children of the wilderness on the American frontier long before it reached the Ohio River. Journey with the Hughes family as they leave the security of the tidewater and travel into the forested Promised Land in western Virginia. Discover their dreams, joys and sorrows as they scratch out their forested empires. Discover how they found love in the midst of Indian captivity and lived to raise families whose true wealth lay in their faith in God and faith in each other.  Relive the adventure, learn the history, and rejoice in the celebration of the lives of these early American heroes.

Information on the books, including the first two chapters of each, is available at:
