Acclaim to Chinese Artist, George Chann(1913-1995By CatherineYen(18,446) ![]() ![]() ![]() Acclaim to the Chinese Abstract Artist- Yin Pi, Chann, also named as George Chann Preface George Chann (1913-1995) was an artist whom we acclaimed nowadays in this morden era, although he might or carelessly be neglected by the people, his arts really reveal his spirits in purly pursing art's goal. The eternal dream makes him although posthumos, his glamour in arts won't be forgotten by all of us now, or the collectors all over the world. His resume and background can be easily found from web site, you can retrieve them by reading his extraordinary life.-- by Author Artistic Technique When George Chann is making use of those calligraphic rubbings or printed matters, he obviously has a special processing method of his own. Those materials may have been tamed by water or other solutions first. Then, he goes on to trample or shred them by converting them into fragments or pieces. Thus, he could apply the techniques of collage and transplant the calligraphic fragments onto the surface of his canvas. After the transplantation, the canvas is now spread with various fragments of calligraphic rubbings.Onto this base, the artist would, then, perform the act of painting. Sometimes, his simply writes more calligraphy on it, which makes the canvas seem like a place for him to practice or exercise calligraphic skills. What Janet Chann(his daughter) has called the "black and white abstract" must have been works of this category. Eternal Pursuing as an Artist For decades, George Chann brooded in his personal art world. Artistic creation for him had become a way of life and was indispensable to him.To show or not did not affect his schedule of painting. Since most of his works were not meant for specific exhibitions, the numerous paintings he had left behind did not carry exact names or titles. He simply painted and did not care whether it would take short or long to finish a work. As soon as a painting was finished, the process was over. Whether it bore a name or title did not matter much. Therefore, the greater majority of the titles for George Chann's works as we see today are posthumous. In year 2000, George Chann's first posthumous solo exhibition was held at Lin&Keng Gallery, Taipei. Together with the showing of his works, more systematic studies on George Chann and his art are also underway. This preliminary study serves only as an initial attempt. The above is excerpted from the catalogue of "George Chann's solo Exhibition-Lin& Keng Gallery" 1-13-2007 This Blog Post has been read 51 times.
