Darning SocksBy beanerywriters(11,675) Composed as a response to a Beanery Writers Group prompt: Writers need to have a story worth telling, whether it’s memoir, fiction or any other genre. But ordinary lives aren’t compelling, to readers or publishers. Choose an event from your life and consider why anyone would care to read about it. Say to yourself, “I’m going to make this so memorable, so great to read, that even though I’m no one, a stranger would be interested in what I have to say.” I’m going to see this event “out of the box” through another’s eyes, or perhaps from another viewpoint. The bright steel of the needle passes smoothly through the ragged edges, drawing white healing through sparse remaining threads. Back and forth, time and again, creating new warp and woof, gradually concealing the smooth surface of the wooden sphere keeping the material taut; in and out in ever tightening pattern, making whole cloth of torn. There is satisfaction in the task – satisfaction of repetition; satisfaction of silence. Yet it is a useless endeavor, totally unnecessary. A quick trip to the store and a dozen new pairs of socks would lie in the drawer. It is redundant, foreign to a modern world, as obsolete as meditation. This Blog Post has been read 6 times.
