There Was a Time
By beanerywriters(11,675)
There was a time when the weekday wash hung on the clothesline to dry in the wind and sun, Afternoons were spent in the garden with rake and hoe as mom tilled row after row to plant seeds and flowers, the hours seemed to fly. . . Dad mowed the grass and clipped the shrubs, while I followed behind with wheelbarrow picking up twigs and trimmings. Smelling country clean the clothes were unpinned and neatly folded, the mower parked in the shed all the garden tools gathered in, then just before bed we relaxed beneath the maple trees fanned by a cool breeze. Mom brought out bowls of oven-fresh treats: blackberry pie, vanilla ice cream moist chocolate chips dipped in tall glasses of rich farm milk topped with real cream.
