SAVED by GRACE Lent Devotion #8

Scripture: Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faith- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so
that no one can boast. [NIV]
As I stood with several friends in the funeral parlor, gathered to honor a loved one, I heard many comments about our friend---truly she had been a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother. She had been a tireless worker in her church and civic organizations, especially those that helped the needy. And her many years teaching the early elementary Sunday school classes had surely led others to know Christ.
What caught my attention was the emphasis placed on her works and how these works surely had earned her a place in heaven. I was reminded of a statement the apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians: for it is by grace you have been saved…not by works.
Although we certainly must not judge another person’s salvation or their motive for doing charitable deeds, we can judge our own. We must remember that salvation is by grace and our works are the byproduct of that salvation.
Prayer: Father, we thank you for your grace, by which our salvation is sure.
May our faith be seen in the works we do and may they be done for your glory. Amen
