And we dressed in new “attire” for the occasion! We decided to change our “clothes” in honor of our first anniversary and to celebrate having enough hits (now totaling 14,800) to be in the top spot on the ProBlogs.com blog-hosting site. Let us know how you like the change by commenting (click on the title of this posting, scroll down to the comment box and don’t forget to hit POST when you are finished or E-mailing us at beaneryblog@yahoo.com. At our last BW Group meeting we wrote on the following prompt: Describe something that is beautiful without using that word or a synonym---Do the same thing with something that is--- Dangerous, Frightening, Peaceful, Sad, Awesome, Inspiring, Tedious, Sensual, Exciting, Alarming, Surprising, Fun, Entertaining, Rewarding, Comforting, Etc. Since I didn’t record members responses, I’ll share a couple of mine. This exercise in “show, don’t tell,” is really quite difficult. Peaceful: I was affected by the colors of the sky reflected from the glass-surface pond beside the meadow where I lay on my blanket. Awesome: Her eyes grew bigger as her mother came into the room bearing a huge box wrapped in pink flowered paper. Attached balloons held a card that said happy birthday. Tedious: She groaned softly as the conveyer belt moved a continuous line of chocolates past her, for her inspection. All day, some days more than eight consecutive hours with only a half hour lunch break, she had to watch the little brown items pass by, looking for imperfections. If her mind wandered and she missed a flaw she would lose her job, her only income. Entertaining: The clown pranced about, tweaking the chins of children and adults alike, passing out colored balloons and real smiles coordinating with the make-up smile painted on his face. His audience laughed with joy, reaching out, hoping to receive a balloon to remember this most fabulous day by. Comforting: The woman by the coffin shook with grief in front of her son’s coffin. A stranger to her came and placed a hand on her shoulder. We invite our readers to try this exercise. To post your results, click on the title of this piece and scroll down to the comment section. Don’t forget to hit “post” when you’re done! Our next meeting is March 9, at the Coffee Bean Café on Rt. 30 in Latrobe, PA. Remember, we have a guest author coming in to celebrate our first anniversary. Carolyn |
