Kathleen's Bio

By beanerywriters(11,675)

Writing poetry has been "in my blood" since my pre-teen years.  Maintaining a "love of words," I follow a family tradition. My mother, Mary Evelyn, and sister, Marilyn, also wrote poetry, essays and short stories, many which achieved awards and publication. My first poem was written in 1967.  Where Are You Running won a high school competition and was published in three successive anthologies. Since 1989 my poems have been published in various journals, newspapers and anthologies and I’ve received over 25 Honorable Mentions, as well as several Merit and Editor's Choice awards.

I placed 4th in the 1987 Pittsburgh Writer's Guild Chapbook Contest. Since then the following accepted or published my work: Monongahela Valley Review, 1988; LUCIDITY (Journal of Verse, Houston, TX) 1989-2006; Sky Blue Waters Poetry League, Faribault, MN 2000-2003, May 2001, and TAPROOT LITERARY REVIEW Ambridge, PA - May 2003.

By Definition was selected online by the ivillage.com Website’s Second Annual Poetry Slam, 2001.  Two poems, Berry Sticky and August Wind were accepted for the Country 2004 and Friendship 2004 editions of IDEALS PUBLICATIONS, Nashville, TN.   Poems Jasmine & Jewel and Habitat are located on theWildlife Works Website – WORDS FROM THE WILD.

In 2005 I began writing short stories.  Two are completed – The Dare Devil Dames: Mystery & Mayhem (26 pgs) and Manuela’s Mission (14 pgs).  The third still requires a lot of editing.

Although I’ve submitted a couple Chapbooks for competitions, I haven’t placed.  The competition is so fierce, it requires a miracle to win!

Several organizations have read my poetic creations memorializing special people, events, holidays and September 11, 2001.  Poems have also been published and distributed in local church bulletins.  Two poems, A Majestic Fourth and The Wander Bus, written for Carol Love Tours, Youngwood, PA, have been read to tour passengers.

I create special occasion poems for friends and relatives, each artistically decorated and framed.

I graduated from California University of PA, California, PA, (1991) with a B.A. in Journalism/Creative Writing.  ---Kathleen
