BUSY---I'M SO BUSY!!! Lent Devotion #28By CarolynCHolland(9,534) ![]() ![]() SCRIPTURE: Matthew 11:29 “Take My (Jesus’) yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” REFLECTION: Remember the Sabbath? Or are you too busy to note its passing, something easy to do while living in a culture that prizes a business model? The almost universal greeting, ‘I am so busy,’ is said with no small degree of pride, as if our exhaustion were a trophy and our ability to withstand stress a mark of real character. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others.” How often we say to others, “Oh, I’m soooo busy!” I try to remember to take time out my “business” to listen to others. Of course, being a counselor and reporter, a good bit of my “business” is listening. Still, I often have difficulty “listening” if I’m not “working.” Being unavailable to our friends and family, being unable to find time for the sunset (or even to know that the sun has set at all), needing to whiz through our obligations without time for a single mindful breath---this is our model of a successful life. In taking time to be with my granddaughter Jordan I experience “off” time, time to learn to listen to a small child, if I care or dare. It’s a time to be absent from regular business, to see the glory of God in the eyes of a small child. She and I spent a whole day at the local railroad tracks watching the cleanup of a train derailment. We met new friends as we “hung out.” We went home and made a picnic lunch for one family who was watching and didn’t bring food along, and we all ate under the highway bridge during a mid-day storm. Since Jordan loves trains, this was a time to let her “smell the roses.” She led me to the privilege of doing so, too, for without her I would have been working. We watched several trains up close and personal as they moved through Connellsville. Sunday is not always a true Sabbath day for a pastor’s family. I find taking another day more to my liking. And I find the little child leads me. Who is leading you? PRAYER: Lord, help me to be truly present with others who pass through my day. Help me to break through the “business” to experience the true meaning of life. Amen. ---written by Carolyn This Blog Post has been read 22 times.
