THE CANVAS

            Light spread softly
            across the blank canvas. . .
            A little girl lay face down on the ground.
            one arm encircling her face,
            flaxen braids, blue jeans and pink shirt
            a doll within reach. . .
            It seemed that others looked down,
            watched with curiosity from places aloft.
            The scene lovingly painted was innocence untainted,
            and someone guided my hand;
            each stroke was part of the whole
            desire pierced my spirit, longing filled my soul. . .
           
            The little girl was unafraid,
            a study in perfection
            and Angels watched in wonder
                        no voice spoke
                        no silence broke
            this awesome scene.  .  .
                        Then the master painter made known
            'Tomorrow we will continue this work'
            and quietly withdrew from the earth.
