September 28, 2006. Greetings to all from New England. Monte and I began our New England sojourn on Cape Cod, the guests of Bob, my father's cousin. He was preparing to close his Cape Cod cottage and to open his Florida home, but was gracious enough to host us for two nights. We exchanged numerous genealogical items, and he gave me a Cornell family Bible dated 1853. It is volume one of two volumes, and lists some of the Cornell births and deaths. While there we ate out two evenings. The first was fun with Bob, and the second we included Monte's nephew Gay and his wife Dale, whom usually open up their home for us when we visit Cape Cod. The highlight of picture taking was the sunsets, from Bob's backyard and the restaurant where we met Monte's nephew. Monte was disatisfied witht he poor motel we stayed at outside Worcester, so he made other arrangements for the second night here. He was impressed at the Antiquarian Society building and its ease of access, and the streetsigns with hearts on them. On to the Antiquarian Society. We had to have tow forms of ID, one a picture, and fill out two forms prior to gaining entry. We had to be working on a specific project to gain entry. They provided lockers for materials not allowed in the library proper---wallets, bags etc. No pens, either. Only pencils. Once inside staff members kept correcting my behavior---I had to keep MSS FLAT on the table, i couldn't have the book holder on my lap. One neat thing, they have "page holders" so the pages would lie flat while one is typing. A new craft idea. After lunch, we participated in a Wednesday afternoon tour, into the stacks, the microfilming room, saw a printing press. They had much original material I already researched, but was able to pick up new information. They didn't have a couple items I thought they would have. All in all it was an interesting experience. A night at Leominster and return to the library for a final shot at material. We learned my fourth cousin Sue from Atlanta, GA and her sister Jackie from Wisconsin were on separate trips to New England. We are changing our plans so we can meet Sue for the first time in Maine. More in next installment. Carolyn |
