LOVE BY SERVING Lent Devotion #29

By CarolynCHolland(9,534) CarolynCHolland

SCRIPTURE: Mark 12:33     To love him (God) with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. (NIV)
REFLECTION: The English language can be confusing. This and other commandments, direct a person is to “love” God, neighbor and self.
Dobson has a book out titled Love is a Decision. In it, he points out that love as a feeling is undependable, since feelings themselves can be undependable. They are founded on emotions, not on realities. Many external and internal factors can influence how one feels.
Perhaps I have been misreading and therefore misunderstanding this scripture. When I see the word love I am like others: I see an emotion. And, quite frankly, I don’t always feel love.
As I continue to read Scripture, a different picture of love emerges. Love is action.
God wants obedience. We are told to serve our fellow man. In serving we love. In service we put other persons’ needs before our own. We are thereby sacrificing. We are giving of ourselves.
The burnt offerings and sacrifices referred to in this verse are visible materials offered to make others see us as loving. True burnt offerings and sacrifice are often not even seen by others---they are just done and over with, with no care about one “looking better into he eyes of another.”

To wait for the “right feeling” of love to perform deeds of caring may be missing the point. We must obey God. We must fulfill our part of the creation contract. We must serve. If we do not, we are not loving God, neighbor or self.

PRAYER: Lord, opportunities to do service constantly cross our path, and we miss them because we can’t see them. Help me be more aware of these opportunities and to show love to you through fulfilling the service. Amen    ---Carolyn
