CLAY TREASURES

By beanerywriters(11,675)

My Mom was bitten by the “travel bug”
so when I was twelve we boarded a train
bound for El Paso, Texas, where my brother lived.
I remember the Southwestern-style homes,
the southern sun hot and high in a sultry blue sky,
rays bouncing off shiny sixties cars
that lined cul de sac driveways.
When he took us on sight-seeing tours,
intense waves of simmering heat
rose from the highway,
and I was fascinated
by fork-pronged Saguaro’s, prickly cactus
and long stretches of arid land
dotted by tufts of vegetation.

Later, I donned my swimsuit to splash
in the backyard inflatable pool,
then found a comfortable spot
to sit and dig in the dirt…
Sifting a mixture of red-clay with coarse sand
and water to a pliable consistency
I shaped little clay animals:
             turtles, lizards, snakes,
ladybugs, a pottery dish or two
My fingers stained red-brown from the wet clay.
I placed them carefully on a small cardboard,
carried them into the house,
then set the pieces on the window ledge
to dry in the oven-hot sun.

These tiny clay treasures,
kept for many years,
displayed on my bedroom bookshelf
until like ancient ruins,
they shattered or disintegrated…

The title caught my attention. Loved the development and ending; for me, the transition between the main body and last "stanza" was abrupt. Been to ruins and not all disintegrate.
