How to remain YoungBy Creative(51,585) ![]() ![]() Posted Thursday, October 18, 2007 View All Blog Posts submitted by Creative When I was a child, I was not in the rush that my peers were to be an adult as I realized my childhood would be brief compared to how long I was likely to spend as an adult so I wanted to celebrate my youth and make the most of the freedoms it afforded me. I wanted to be an adult only in as much as it would give me more control over my life, but other than that, I could not see the appeal.
I am not remotely ageist and neither was I when I was a child. I love the older generation and admire them hugely. They have wisdom, wit and are incredibly resilient. I see some less able senior citizens getting about with swollen ankles, faulty hips and weighed down with shopping. They walk for miles like that in all weathers, I should be so lucky at 37 to manage that! Teenagers with their text lingo are a bit of a mystery but I can still click with them. All children can see the child in me and I can always recall what I thought and I felt at their age so can relate and forgive and tolerate. I am still very free spirited and am annoyed by societies restrictions on my personal freedom based on my age. But I get around this now I have children. My kids allow me to be almost as free as I want to be in that I can use them as the excuse for my 'childlike' behavior but in truth, when I am on my own and there seems no one around to stare, I still walk on low walls. I still shuffle my through crunchy autumn leaves, pretend the curb is a narrow beam stretched across an erupting volcano that I must NOT fall off or I shall perish! I swing on swings, enjoy a see saw and am always lost in a daydream. We must never forget what it is to be young and we must not presume to know what it is to be old.
