Joe Torre Deserved BetterBy Rob Trahan(12,253) ![]() ![]() Posted Thursday, October 18, 2007 View All Blog Posts submitted by Rob Trahan George Steinbrenner is a man who is long on money and short on common sense. His reign over the New York Yankees has always been punctuated by free spending and outlandish decisions, the latest of which is surely going to backfire. After claiming that he wouldn't bring Manager Joe Torre back if the Yankees didn't win the World Series, Steinbrenner did something even more insulting and offered Torre a new contract at a significant pay cut. Yes, Torre still would have been the highest paid manager in baseball if he signed the $5 million contract (his contract that ended this year was for about $7.5 million a year). But he also would have been showing weakness to his team. He would have been taking the blame for another "failed" season. It's not Torre's fault that his pitching staff was a joke. It's not Torre's fault that he has the largest collection of egos this side of The Sopranos that he has to manage. Frankly, he should be commended for getting the team as far as they did. Steinbrenner apparently conveniently forgot where his team was at the All-Star break. Most people had written the season off completely, assuming they had no chance of even making the postseason. Torre rallied the troops and squeezed every run out of them that he could and managed to secure a wildcard spot despite all of the criticism. Torre is eighth on the list of managers with the most wins and second on the list of Yankees managers. He's a sure hall-of-famer and a class act surrounded by idiots. So what's next? Torre's departure could be the start of a mass exodus. Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez all have the option to leave this offseason and my bet is at least two of them do. Don Mattingly is tops on Steinbrenner's list to replace Torre and the rumor is that Joe Girardi is also on the list. How will either of those men do handling that clubhouse? I wish Torre well. I've never been a Yankees fan, but I'm a fan of classy people. Torre is certainly a class act. This Blog Post has been read 218 times.
