Paul Byrd and HGHBy Rob Trahan(12,248) ![]() ![]() Posted Sunday, October 21, 2007 View All Blog Posts submitted by Rob Trahan But it is a sign of the times that even Byrd makes the news because of how scandalous steroids and HGH have become. Rarely does a news cycle pass without at least one story about performance enhancing drugs. Consider Marion Jones, Floyd Landis, George Mitchell, Barry Bonds and Kimberly Bell, and all of those "big names" that are on the horizon. One or more of them can be found on any given sports website on any given day. When as much attention is paid to an issue as has been given performance enhancing drugs, every story, not matter how trivial, becomes big news. Enter Paul Byrd, the junk ball pitcher for the Cleveland Indians. On the day that his team plays it's biggest game of the season, a game that will decide whether they play any more this year or not, information is leaked that Byrd bought HGH and syringes between 2002 and 2005 from a company that is being investigated for supplying the drug illegally. Here's the catch: he bought it with his own credit card and had it delivered to the ballpark on occasion. He even had the assistance of MLB in finding doctors to take blood while he was on the road. This is a non-story, but because it involves those three letters-HGH-it automatically casts doubt on Byrd and the Indians. It's sad that it has come to this. It's sad that so many look for shortcuts, even going so far as to turn to illegal substances. It's sad that the organization that they worked for was so desperate for money that it turned a blind eye to what was going on. Forget health risks. Forget laws. At the end of the day that's what it comes down to-money. Everyone wanted more and no one cared what they did to get it. And that greed brings guys like Byrd into the spotlight for something other than his Bugs Bunny delivery, his 45 MHP fastball or his team's fight to reach the World Series. Remember when the purpose of professional sports was to entertain fans? Now everyone is Rod Tidwell. they just want you to show them the money. This Blog Post has been read 237 times.
