Halloween - Trick or Treat

Every Halloween small children dress up as scary creatures and troll about the neighborhood knocking on doors hoping to be given money or treats. I am not certain of how this tradition got started but I reluctantly participate mainly because the kids go to such trouble with their costumes and makeup and of course I did trick or treat myself as a child.

So why do I reluctantly participate in the trick and treat tradition?

I can't help but view it as begging, asking strangers for money. I am a stranger to the children that knock my door. Though many are now accompanied by a parent - who is also a stranger. The children do not restrict their visits to those that they know. I worry about vulnerable old people who may be afraid to open their door.

Don't get me wrong I do celebrate Halloween. Last year I had a big Halloween party for about 14 young children and will again this year. Due to popular demand it is likely to be an annual tradition. It's great fun. I devise Halloween games and get Halloween costumes, and we make various Halloween decorations for a few weeks in the run up to this extraordinary day.

BUT, I am not looking forward to trick or treaters this year. Last year I had quite a nasty shock and while nothing came of it, I do not want to be shocked that way again.

After receiving various short guests no older than 10yrs old, I opened my door to a man/teenager dressed in a scream mask and dark robe. He was taller than me. My eyes were not prepared to be looking at someone of his height so I opened the door bowed down and had to rise upwards to greet him. He stretched out his hand and I popped a couple of sweets into it. Then I shut the door as quickly as I could. What on earth was this grown and lone teen/adult doing trick or treating?

I won’t be doing it this year. I’m on my own and when my party guests are all gone, there is NO way I am answering the door to ghouls and goblins! Sorry kids!
