World Series Preview, Sort OfBy Rob Trahan(12,253) ![]() ![]() Posted Monday, October 22, 2007 View All Blog Posts submitted by Rob Trahan In 2001 it was the Diamondbacks knocking off the juggernaut from the Bronx. The Yankees came into that series winners of three straight World Series (with a combined record of 12-1, no less). All we remember now is Jeter playing in and Luis Gonzales dumping a bloop over his head in the bottom of the ninth of game 7. The D-backs were followed by Anaheim, Florida (again!), Boston, Houston and Chicago (in the same series) and Detroit. This year the trend is kept alive in the most improbable way. How about 21-1 over the last 22 games. Or fourth place and six games back on September 1. Recognize these names: Francis, Tulowitzki, Corpas, Spilborghs? That's right, it's your 2007 Colorado Rockies. For the life of me, I can't figure out how they're doing it. They're pitching good, hitting good, fielding good. But they're not overwhelming anyone. They're just winning. They swept the Phillies in the Division Series. Handled the Diamondbacks in the Championship Series. And they're rested (and antsy) and looking forward to the challenge at hand. And man, is that a challenge! The Red Sox come in finally relaxed after finishing off the Indians in 7. They were down 3-1 in the series and not looking comfortable at all. Manny and Big Papi were the only players hitting and Beckett was the only effective pitcher. Then they woke up Thursday and put it in another gear. They outscored the Indians 30-5 in the last three games. Schilling pitched well, Matsuzaka pitched well. The rest of the lineup started hitting. And it was all over. So what is in store for this series? Honestly, I wish I knew. No one picked the Rockies in their first two series and they cruised. The Sox were the favorites against Cleveland and they struggled. Boston is clearly the more talented team. But you can't account for will, for heart, or for timing. Colorado has all three. Too bad they also have those ugly purple uniforms ... Purple isn't ugly. Neither is orange. Comment by Rob Trahan(12,253) ![]() (205 days 16 hours ago.)
On grown men, purple is pretty sad. Maybe if they mixed some teal in with it ... And I absolutely agree about orange! Thanks for the comment.
