BCS Championship Game is set, who's in?By Rob Trahan(12,255) ![]() ![]() Posted Sunday, December 02, 2007 View All Blog Posts submitted by Rob Trahan No, it's the 11-2 LSU Tigers, who lost 2 games in 3OT, both to opponents who were either ranked when they played or ended up ranked. LSU beat Tennessee in the SEC Championship game to secure their spot in the minds of the voters. The Tigers opponent? How about the Ohio State Buckeyes, who got the bid by virtue of not losing this weekend. What's that, they didn't play? Eh, technicality. What's that, they play in a relatively weak Big Ten conference? It's not their fault! They got beat by Illinois? At least it's not Appalachian State! LSU - Ohio State on January 7. Not Oklahoma. Not Georgia. Not Hawaii. Not USC. And not anywhere near a playoff system. It's good enough for every other college sport, and even good for lower levels of NCAA football. But a playoff system is no good for Division 1A football. This season is a BCS hater's dream. It is Exhibit A in the court of public opinion, People vs Stupid BCS System That Decides Nothing But Which Schools Get Millions And Which Schools Get Megamillions. The problem is, public opinion doesn't matter. The schools are happy with the status quo. The bowl organizers are happy with the status quo. And even if the fans and students hate it with all of the fires of hades, they are still selling out 100,000 seat stadiums all season long. What incentive is there to change? It's the new motto of the NCAA: If it's broke but still makes money, don't fix it! So what's next? We wait a month before we see meaningful college football again. In January, we'll see what the BCS feels like are the best matchups: LSU-Ohio State in the Championship Game, Virginia Tech-Kansas in the ORange Bowl, Hawaii-Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, Oklahoma-Wets Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl and USC-Illinois in the Rose Bowl. Next year, we'll start over with a clean slate and a preseason poll based on this year's success and reputation before the teams even step out on the field. And last week's #1 team (Missouri) is no closer to a BCS game than you or me. This Blog Post has been read 272 times.
