Advertising harmful to children

Just as the sweet and drinks manufacturers are trying to get their product into schools for some subliminal child targeted advertising ( see HERE ) and thus increase their own sales; the government in the UK is about to investigate the possible adverse affects of advertising on children. Possible effects, which may lead to increased anxiety, drug and drink dependency etc.

Full story HERE. BBC News 9.12.07.

"Children see some 10,000 TV adverts a year and recognise 400 brands by age 10,Children's Secretary Ed Balls says.

He said many parents were concerned about youngsters being bombarded with adverts and media images that encouraged the "sexualisation" of girls."

and

"A survey by education inspectors Ofsted last month found that one in five 10 to 15-year-olds regularly got drunk."

Meanwhile I read recently that in America, children are so heavily influenced by the McDonalds logo that wrapping a banana in it makes it suddenly more appealing than without.

Personally if parents wish to protect their kids from the effects of advertising, I would advise not encouraging it by resorting to wrapping your fruit and veg in these logo's! Educate them very early on about what is good and what is not and that moderation is key, rather than complete abstainance which rarely works for a lifetime as children invariably rebel at some stage. Teach them how to make sensible healthy choices.

One of the major influences on children's behaviour has to be reality Tv or soaps as this is what they are been taught is 'real' life, which it rarely is and that includes reality Tv which is also fairly staged and scripted despite what the producers would have us believe. I daresay any intervention by the government to reduce adverts directed at children will result in more products on display in these types of shows. Where there is a will there is a way and those cunning advertisers will find our kids some how, so better to let them know when they are being 'got'.

Meanwhile to avoid the effects of TV advertising, don't watch so much TV, perhaps switch to DVD's or make it a family 'habit' to  'mute' the TV when the programming is paused for adverts.
Raise children to be aware that there is a deliberate attempt by product manufacturers to influence their purchases and to be mindful of times when they are being influenced and to try to remain objective and detached.
