Christmas stress – where’s the spirit?

Christmas is a funny time of year. We know it’s supposed to be a time of giving and celebrating and yet many of us cannot help but get caught up in the stressful drama and family politics that proceed and swamp this day of celebration.

There is the obvious expense, and problems re what to buy whom. Then there are issues of where to spend Christmas or who to invite and whether certain friends and family will get along with others you’ve invited. Maybe you were expecting an invite and didn't get one but your other relative did!

There may be a family dispute that is set to disrupt this happy day causing divisions in loyalty. People judge you on the decisions made at this time of year more so than any other. Forget to send that card at your peril! Aunty Mavis will never forgive you, as she will assume you have forgotten her or that you still harbour a grudge about that recent tiff.

Jealousies may arise on the great gift unwrapping if a sibling gets a more personal or expensive gift than you.

Of course there are those who don’t have friends and family to share this day with and so they spend it alone. They may be happy to do so, or the ‘silence’ may engulf them and they feel more alone than ever.

There will be fights over spaces in the car park, while everyone is rushing about, doing everything at the last minute. You’d think with freezers we wouldn’t have to do that so much now, but it hasn’t changed.

Then there are the memories of those absent, those who aren’t around to celebrate and perhaps their loss is felt more at this time of year.

Lots of reasons to wish Christmas is over as quickly as possible and yet as each year passes, we seem to start the preparations earlier. Shops are displaying Christmas decorations from October; some people have their lights up in November!

I guess despite the stress, anguish and grief, we feel compelled to 'do' Christmas…and make it worth it. I just hope that it is.

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate it and a Happy New Year.
