Patriots Pursuit of Perfection Pushes ForwardBy Rob Trahan(12,255) ![]() ![]() Posted Sunday, December 30, 2007 View All Blog Posts submitted by Rob Trahan With their 38-35 win over the New York Giants Saturday night, New England became the first team to go undefeated in a 16-game regular season (the '72 Dolphins only played 12 games). They blew opponents out, frequently running up the score. The came from behind, as they had to do against the Giants. They played bad teams (the 1-14, soon-to-be 1-15, Dolphins twice) and good teams (the Cowboys and Colts are two of the best non-Patriots teams in the league). They beat them all. You can say a lot about the 2007 New England Patriots. They cheated. They bullied. They were poor sports. They poked opposing players in the eye! But one thing you have to say is they earned it. They played every game like it was the Super Bowl™ and have the record to prove it. Questions abounded going into the last two weeks about whether they could keep their focus in two meaningless games. They did and more. Saturday's game marked only the second time they went into the locker room trailing after the first half. Tom Brady set the league mark for touchdown passes in a season with 50, surpassing Peyton Manning's previous total of 49. Randy Moss set the team record for touchdown receptions in a season. But most surprisingly, if all goes right this weekend, the player with the most receptions in the league this season is Wes Welker. Say what you want about Brady's big name receiver, but he's still getting it done with castoffs as well. Teams have game planned for taking Moss out of the game and Welker, Donte' Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney always step up. Wekler was cut by the Dolphins. Stallworth underachieved at New Orleans and Philadelphia. Gaffney was let go by the Texans. I've seen Gaffney play, he was crap! And Welker is poised to be the league's leading receiver and Gaffney and Stallworth have made big receptions over and over again. Their defense is a combined 1,438 years old and they give up points. But they make the big plays when they have to (Hobbs' interception to seal the win Saturday is just the latest). What's next for the Pats? Anything less than a Super Bowl™ would be considered a disappointment in their locker room. Personally, I'd love to see it, if for no other reason than to stop all the talk about the '72 Dolphins and their supposed champagne toasting. This Blog Post has been read 261 times.
