Forum Etiquette – Information for Newbies!By Creative(51,639) ![]() ![]() Posted Friday, January 04, 2008 View All Blog Posts submitted by Creative Having been around forums a while now I can tell you that they vary vastly in their community structure and operation and how well they operate and how friendly the inhabitants are really depends on how the forum is administered. If the forum admin are militant and try to suppress and control the content of posts and behaviour of posters, then this attitude passes to members who can become squealers reporting all deviances from acceptable forum behaviour to the admin.
These breaches of forum protocol may be worthy of a warning or ban, but on the pettiest of boards they may involve something as slight as posting with too much familiarity when you are new to the board. Some communities prefer their newest members to sit quietly in the wings observing users posting habits and then to later slip quietly into the forum dynamic unnoticed. Being noticed too early is highly frowned upon.
So if you want to be popular with forum admin as a newbie, simply don’t post! I know it rather defeats the object but that’s the way it goes. When you do post, be humble, be polite, and be gracious. Do not be ‘clever, witty or presumptuous’ and above all do not breach that forums posting etiquette or the natives will turn and hit that report button quicker than you can say ‘stab me in the back’!
