Trust in the Free Market, yea, right!By Robert Melaccio, sr(28,936) ![]() ![]() Posted Friday, January 18, 2008 View All Blog Posts submitted by Robert Melaccio, sr America is now suffering the impact of Free and Open markets. In my opinion it is called greed. So when you hear politicians speak to and get this, trusting the Free Market to set price, etc, you have to wonder in my opinion only just where their heads are? Now of course those making excessive profits and getting their dividend checks and seeing their investments go up are all for this, so one must suspect this certainly is a good thing, for them. Certainly all indicators they follow demonstrate this. After all it is not about nations but markets and investment. Now they may say they are not wealthy but let them come on down to reality and work for what many Americans are today. In my opinion you would see a shift or "change" as they like to say and real fast. They are the haves of America, that is right the 20% who own it all and make it all. Why wouldn’t they love it? So why do you my friend expect change? After all "Money always trumps peace" GW Bush. Now examples right out of one of the most free market states in the union, Florida. Our Governor, who is a Free Market thinker and who I consider a decent man is trying hard to deal with the issues left over by his predecessor, also a very definite Free Market thinker. He placed all his trust in the insurance industry to help lower Floridians Home Owners Insurance. Considerable risk was assumed by the citizens of this state. So much so that in order to even afford protection there is almost no real protection. That used to be called assigned risk and it was accepted as part of wanting to do business. No Longer. Like the Gold Standard that went away a long time ago. Who needs risk, we need profits. So what does one of these Free Market insurers do. That’s right, they petition Florida for a 42% rate hike. Now Missouri fined them for the same reason and for not responding to their legal, mind you, requests. Do you really think that hurt them? A measly 2.5 million dollar fine when profits are at an all time high and in the billions. They laugh at that. It is an expense item on the ledger and most likely a loss so they get to write it off at tax time. So Florida decides to prohibit their selling Auto insurance, another highly lucrative aspect of insurance in this Free Market state where people are drowning in that cost as well. They don’t lose existing policies but they can’t write any new. The kicker is this lowers the competition so in my opinion all the rest can now raise their costs and pass it along to you can guess, yes the consumer. Our Governor calls them greedy and I have another word for them.
So this At Will, Free Market State is the home of the haves, business and personal and the rest of us who have not. Yes, low wages, no benefits, no full work week and no future. Well we are here and what else can be said except our types are trying hard to move. Where, we don’t really know. In my opinion only can’t move to Iowa, we know how they think. Can’t move to new Hampshire, we know how they think. Michigan well what can we say. So just why do Americans think the Free Market and Global system is the answer when most, no, not that 20%, but most are doing poorer today then even a year ago? Why do they believe these same ones who brought us this situation and crisis, what in my opinion I call fiasco, will do better or different? Just check the records my friend and see what they supported and no doubt will continue to do.
Number one lets talk to the war. If you look at free markets you will learn that the very first thing that is critical to its success is Democracy. Rhetorically could that be why we have a zeal to spread Democracy through the world or is it that we are "humanitarian"? Can that be why so many hate America? Perhaps they don’t want or need our system? Perhaps they don’t care about these Free Markets. After all many have been exploited in the past by other historical powers. It was about money tand power then and it is in my opinion now. So here is the new effect of this Free Market ideology and rapid expansion by nature of facts. 1- In my opinion, Iraq.
2- Credit card greed unmatched and unbridled. 3- Home Foreclosure and plenty of Homeless.
4- 40 million close to poverty.
5- 50 million with no health insurance.
6- 35 million go to bed hungry each day in America, much less the world.
7- Child labor abuse.
8- Food, toy, tire and other poisons and faulty products.
9- Trade deficits beyond belief.
10 Our nation is billions in debt and mostly to sworn enemies.[There is an answer if one knows where to look].
11 Our infrastructure is crumbling.
12 Millions of Illegal Workers, not immigrants all about and still coming.
13 Low wage jobs with no future, that is if you can even find a job.
14 Social security in jeopardy.
15 Natural and man made disasters and environmental issues are a major concern and worry.
16 No manufacturing, technology, tool and die and now no Auto industry [check out Canada and Mexico ] for that type of work.
16 Education that is failing Americans while rewarding foreigners.
Should I go on, I can’t write all day. Yes all this and more and all brought to you, yes brought to you by the very same ones who are running for President and Congress. So I know why that 20% likes them but for the life of me I can’t figure out why the 80% of the rest of us do? No, not when 90% of us say Congress does nothing. Are these not for the most part these same [hello] people? If Americans don’t open their eyes and see the forest, because you can’t see through the trees, and evidently you just vote on a whim, because of race, a social statement, you like their looks, their color or whatever other superficial aspect that drives you to vote for them then there really is nothing else to say. Then we then truly deserve what we get. In my opinion to think the Free Market is the answer for average Americans much less the world is written on the backs of the poor, the illegal worker, the child laborer, middle class America and wherever cheap labor can be had in this nation and the world. You know by the Golden Umbrellas in every boardroom across this land, do poorly and you leave with millions. Look at the profits of these large companies and truly where their allegiance lies. In my opinion the only allegiance money has is in making more money and in increasing market share. Trust in the Free Market, yea, right! It is not in fair and free trade that the problems lies. It never did, it is the exploitation and greed. Spread American principals, ideas and business capability but don’t give away the farm. As they say, sorry "the cats already out of the bag".
So just where are those good jobs so people can pay their bills? Do you really think this tax refund or rebate is going to work when many people are almost a month or more behind in rent and some in Foreclose mode, owe taxes due in March, based on appraisals that are higher 80% or more then their home is worth now, pay Credit Cards that went from 15% to 31% or more. Just where are these people and just how do they think? Is this help for those who do not need it but are running scared? Rhetroically, just what world do they live in? Are we going to run out and buy that new Car, TV, Washing machine with this stipend or pay for food, electric, gas for the car? Give us a break! Do what I said in my earlier articles and I believe you will ahve an immediate impact and you will actually stimulate this economy and move the market and in my opinion "thats a fact Jack" as the movie line goes! If they are, who they say they are and profess, then they need to act now to stop what in my opinion is rape, simple and pure and certainly SIN. I’ll vote for the one who proves they have changed by deed and not just what they profess, We should all demand and expect that and no less before Election Day or vote them OUT!
