Candidates, Bankruptcy and 30% or more interest on Credit Cards.

By Robert Melaccio, sr(28,936) Robert Melaccio, sr

In the Democratic debates the candidates made some comments concerning Bankruptcy and Credit Card interest that are major impacts for many average Americans  and the poor, especially in this current economy. In my opinion it demonstrates just what I am taking to when I question their leadership abilities. Certainly an entire exact content of the debates can be found in the many sources for those interested. I encourage you to do so.

While not addressing the Republicans please understand they had a key role in the passage of these bills along with the zeal to try to pass Comprehensive Immigration reform. A bill 80% of us didn't want and many in both parties worked for, including some of these leading candidates. Have we forgotten?

So the real question that comes from this and for all of us who vote to consider is if you can tell me why they are leaders in your mind? I’m speaking to if you feel they are the ones who can bring about change? Yes, change from their ways, ideology and deeds but more importantly influence others to do the same?

Well evidently Bankruptcies are up 40% in one year. Many suspect these will rise significantly. In 2001 Senator Clinton voted for the Bankruptcy Bill that made it tougher on middle class or average Americans. She stated she regrets that.  According to consumer groups her vote was the killer that got it passed. However, in 2005 she did not vote for the newer bill. She is now talking bankruptcy reform. Yes after the ship sinks the builders want more life boats.

Senator Obama was against both bills. However, and maybe you think this is unfair, he didn’t lead any toward rejecting either. Oh, was it his inexperience? To be fair perhaps he wasn't there in 2001? In either case 2001 or 2005 leaders lead, changers change and followers follow.

Now interestingly they both think America needs jobs. I agree after all in my opinion they and others were the ones who gave them all away by their actions. It also seems NAFTA is now a mistake. How many more mistakes will we see from this group? Rhetorically, could SPP or what is referred to as The North American Union also be a possible mistake? We will know after they meet in New Orleans? Well who supports that one? Have you checked? Could it be any of these candidates? Yes, the same ones who think NAFTA is now bad?  Like I just said, regrets are great but tell that to those at the bottom of the ocean with the Titanic.

Now concerning that amendment that was to prohibit Credit Card companies and get this, from charging more then 30% interest.  A major lobbyist victory. Senator Clinton thought nothing wrong of limiting it to 30%. Does morality ever get into this and is 30% not immoral? Is usury even a word any longer? Hello my fellow average Americans of any race, are you paying 30% or more? Well you know who you can thank. Why not go out and vote for them?

In fact Candidate Edwards was taken back and asked Senator Obama why he voted against it, because he understood the reason being the limit was too high. Senator Obama said yes,. To which Mr. Edwards asked Mr. Obama, if there is no limit? Basically, Obama responded "it didn’t make sense to cap interest rates". Of Course Senator Clinton added, "So you voted for the Credit Card Companies." Anyone being charges 33, 34 or more? You know who you can thank. Have we heard, not even one word, about these rates being usurious or immoral? No not even a mention. Does it matter to anyone?

In fairness one needs to read the entire transcript to get the right context. Yet, the law is now the law and they can talk and regret all they want to. However, what I am speaking to is leadership. What was done and not done and what is fact not profession or rhetoric. I am talking who can make change and lead. Does this sound like leadership when they laud they have been for years? Rhetorically, can we dare ask, leading for who? In my opinion it didn't seem like anyone led here?

To paraphrase, Senator Clinton stated they all need to have consistency in all they say and do and I have to agree. In my opinion we average Americans just haven’t seen it via their works, Republicans or Democrats. What they say and what equals to their deeds. So why would you want to vote for them?

Now just an opinion but it was stated as fact in the beginning of one debate that there are about 5% of 300 million Americans late with credit card payments. Lets assume that their rates shot upwards to 30% or more. That equals 15, million people in credit trouble, especially cards. Not a small number. If we estimate an average increase in interest on a monthly bill of about $50.00 that would equate to about $750 million dollars. if we rolled the rate back to the original rate they opened the card with that would be a savings to people right off the bat and immediately.  That act would place immediately back into their hands money to pay bills, help keep many out of Bankruptcy and still pay the lender at the rate they initally received the card at and the lender is still making money and at no cost to the government then passing legislation

Now, think about this. Ask yourself why would the majority who support big business want to change bankruptcy law or interest regardless of what they say? Think about all it effects and impacts. It is like oil. Think about how many jobs it produces, lawyers, debt collection, courts, police, storage, administration ,etc, etc, etc. In my opinion we should never think this is not a major industry. Credit and its offshoot is a major player in everything that impacts business in this nation and crosses many service industries like insurance and others.

Why all of a sudden do these candidates recognize things are bad and they feel they can change Washington?  I sum it up in one word - election. Are they not part of Washington? Sadly, in my opinion and regardless of race or nationality it is Mr. and Mrs. average America that has to pay the freight and as the movie goes "that’s a fact Jack".

So  here is the challange. If any of them are the leaders they claim and the one to bring change. Let Governor's Huckabee and Romney, because Governors know how to, Senator McCain, Senator Obama and Clinton and all the rest who are and were running and who are in office and who profess or professed they can, go back to Washington, take a week or two and join together to get this done, just like Comprehensive Immigration. What will that do?

1- prove they can work together when they must.

2- prove they can lead or one of them can.

3- Give us a real choice verses no choice.

In my opinion and as they say on the corner "never happen’!
