Honey a Day Keeps the Dr Away

Most of us are already familiar with honey and lemon as a remedy for coughs and sore throats. The lemon supposedly being a mild antiseptic and the honey effective for it’s soothing and antibacterial properties. But how many of us are aware of the many uses of honey in healing and preventing illness?

I myself am still learning about the preventative uses of honey, but have just got my family started on  a daily dose of honey made by local bee's with a view to maintaining overall good health. Obviously this is supported with nutritious meals and exercise etc. but from what I have heard and read of late, I am looking forward to a year free of colds, tummy upsets and other nasties that plagued us last year!

I have before used Manuka 10+ honey whenever I or the children had a tummy upset and for sore throats, but that use was mainly after the onset of illness rather than before. But recently a friend of mine took some advice from a local beekeeper, and has as a result now been using his honey for a few weeks. She gives her children (ages 4 and 5) a teaspoon daily and since she began this they have not been ill with colds or virus's and she believes her sons Asthma has improved. Prior to Christmas (and her use of the honey) her son had no less than 5 separate bouts of tonsillitis in quick succession. Of course there is no way of knowing for sure if the honey is directly responsible for this apparent improvement but for the cost of $6 a jar, it seems worth keeping it up!

My friend was advised that using honey made by local bees was particularly helpful, as they visited the gardens and took pollen from the same plants that we ourselves are exposed to. The beekeeper in particular reported that his hay fever had after years of distressing symptoms completely gone after regularly taking honey made by his own bees.

I have thus recommended this same honey now (as well as using it myself) to another pal of mine who suffers similarly, so it will be interesting to see if she also notices a significant improvement this summer.
