Possible Link Between Cell Phone Usage and Male InfertilityBy Alf Gordon(13,356) Posted Thursday, February 07, 2008 View All Blog Posts submitted by Alf Gordon Hey, guys! Contemplating marriage? Expect to have a family down the road? Then put down that cell phone before it's too late! Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic did a study of 361 men seen at their infertility clinic. They determined that cell phone utilization may have an effect on the quality of a man's sperm. On average, the more hours the men spent on their cell phones each day, the lower their sperm count and the greater their percentage of abnormal sperm. Men who said they used their phones for more than four hours each day had the lowest average sperm count and the fewest normal, viable sperm. The clinic's findings were published in the journal Fertility and Sterility. The concern is that, over time, the electromagnetic energy emitted from mobile phones and other wireless devices could theoretically harm body tissue--by damaging DNA, for example. (Past studies have linked cell phone usage and brain tumors, but the findings have been inconclusive.) The researchers, however, stop short of claiming that cell phone usage actually damages sperm somehow. They also do not identify other factors that may have an impact on the sperm count and viability.
I see this as a potential problem for those gentleman considering their family options. On the positive side, it could be viewed as an easy form of birth control. You know, China is always looking for solutions to their overpopulation problem...maybe somebody should let them know about this...!
