Is free trade bad?By Robert Melaccio, sr(28,936) ![]() ![]() Posted Monday, February 11, 2008 View All Blog Posts submitted by Robert Melaccio, sr Certainly Free Trade of itself is not bad. However and that is the major point, in my opinion it can be. Now if done properly, in the open with fair and equitable exchange of goods and services and monies between nations there is no problem. It allows for the economic growth and prosperity of each nations peoples, or so intended. We all can approve of that. However, when done in an opposite fashion you then create an imbalance, which will by nature of logic throw one nation into duress even while the other prospers and it willg row worse if left unchecked. In the case of the nation on the losing side this usually means an inordinate amount of the transfer of that nations wealth to the other nation in what is called "trade deficit" meaning one nations debt to another for goods consumed, purchased and being created in that other nation. So when we look at the causes we can list these three major ones, exploitation, greed and politcial agenda. In our Global economy many workers are unskilled and as such have extremely low pay. Some earning less then $1.00 a day. In many places child labor and the use of woman and the poor in forced labor low wage environments is rampant. When this happens greedy businesses seize the opportunity to produce their product using that cheap labor resource for goods and services we pay a considerable amount for and have high profit margins. It is just far less expensive to make it offshore and ship it back home, fact!
Now while this is good for the bottom line it eliminates many jobs once held by that nations citizens. This is all justified in the name of competition. This subsequently provides the excuse to lower our wages to be more competitive. In other words if you want to compete in this new Global environment you, the worker, must learn to take less and be more productive. We have all heard about crisis management, have we not? By the way which is the gun used to put more and more onto workers backs reagrdless of the inmpact to the worker. In my opinion this is not a people thing but a money thing. So, because much of the cost of the product is wrapped up in labor the elimination of high paying jobs is a natural progression. The institution of lower paid less benefits is also another give. Coupled with reduced hours and more demands and the installation of fear, the worker is literally forced to produce more and more or simply go. This also produces less benefits and creates financial instability in nation. Does this sound familiar? Now no matter how hard these who want Free Trade talk about all its benefits and how they will "lift" others in the world out of poverty they cannot and I will repeat they cannot eliminate the greed and the exploitation that always exists side by side with increased profits. I just wonder with all the poverty here in America there isn't the same concern? Oh, I forgot and it is true, our poor are still way better off then the rest of the world. They even have a higher standard of living although poor by our standards so why worry.
As a dreamer of course I can't help wondering, as I hear all the professing being stated, if we could adhere to who we say we are, a Christian nation in thought, word and deed, we could not ever compete with slave labor and some of the labor we described above, no never. It would be unacceptable to us.The fact that is tolerated and accepted is of itself a condemnation in my opinion of those who acquiesce to it being allowed. In other words they turned a blind eye toward it making and putting them into the same category and the exploiter. The same with a blind eye toward the breaking of law. Yes, all with a purpose. You don't need more then a street education to understand that. Therefore they are not what they profess but the opposite regardless of the glitter and nice they surround themselves with.
So when you the voter run to vote for any of these candidates who espouse Free Trade why do you not demand an accounting of them? Why, do you accept their words when the facts reveal the opposite and still do. India and China still favored by them, a fact, as are others, Mexico and Canada still in the equation. Think not, then in my opinion think the fool! They say they will change all that, right? Well how? How are they going to "demand" from China when China holds all the cards as does Big Business, just how? They haven't yet, so why now? Oh, yes, your right, they said theyw ould. Sorry I forgot they said that. Yet what it really gets down to is if you, also approve of child labor, exploitation, greed? Now I wrote before that this is not about a beauty contest, although the packaging is critical, many have already purchased the Easter Bunny. No it is about ideology. So do you really, really, really think we can ever compete with the like of India, China, Indonesia, the Philippines when it comes to labor? Yes, even if these nations raise their standards, even a little, guess what? Yes, business will always move to cheaper and cheaper labor sources. We have Africa in the wings and anotehr whole set of opportunities and markets. Does it take time, certainly, but it must happen because it is allowed to happen until the world meets what the economists call "equilibrium". That is where no matter where you go all labor is cheap! So, think carefully because if you say yes, then you are really accepting lower wages, no benefits and longer hours, period. Look at these nations and think.
Yes, then we will all have utopia. That is for the haves. Two classes, the workers and the haves. They will have it all and you will suplly it to them. Nothing new here is it? It always has and will be by nature of man. Yet, it is really about what you will give up that this is about. Money, power, open markets and above all else cheap labor with you the labor portion. They will have made money hand over fist, as they do now in profits that were unheard of even a few short years ago and get this, under the approval and with the help of those people you want to elect. Yes, the Free Traders.
Yes, vote for them and expect more Free Trade along the same lines and that which it will bring. We are today a nation dismantled with little and ever shrinking industrial base, a service society by their own definition. Sadly a fact you who vote for these types in my opinion evidently do not understand or care about, you have yours for the moment. Yes, no leverage here is there?
So, I remind you that when they say jobs, what jobs, what will they pay, who will get them [Green Crads or Americans] when and how and will they stay? So here is the real key for America and all nations who wish to remain free to ponder. A nation to remain sovereign in todays world must maintain a manufacturing and industrial capability. That is the ability to produce independently of any other nations those goods and services necessary to support their military and society. In my opinion to depend on outside sources is inviting you downfall and demise. Ok lets get down to real basics, the war, how manu of our so called allies did you and do you see at our side?
Remember, that is not necessary for Free Markets, because it is only about Markets and Markets have no boundries except those imposed by nations. So as the movie goes "that's a fact Jack!
