Sharia Law in the Uk - a storm in a tea cup?

There is a lot in the British Press at the moment with regards to Sharia Law and concerns over it having a significant influence on the UK's legal system and perhaps even replacing it. Some of the reporting has been somewhat sensationalist and could be seen as fear mongering.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken out about this sensationalist reporting at the same time advocating what he sees as an inevitable integration of Sharia law into UK Society as the only fair system for our increasing Muslim population. He encourages a better understanding of Sharia law and says: "sensational reporting of opinion polls clouds the issue."

Meanwhile, there is already a Sharia council in Wales, which has been the center of much of the controversy. It has none of the fear factor that the press has conjured up, and deals not with criminal issues but rather 'mundane issues such as divorce and mortgages'. See HERE.

The article says this:

Kidwai, speaking at his organization's Cardiff branch this past Saturday, "appealed for calm and emphasized that no Muslims had called for Sharia law to come to Britain." Kidwai said: "This is a knee-jerk reaction - typical Islamophobia in the crudest sense...It's creating fear for ordinary people, showing Sharia law to be cruel and putting a community down. Probably 90 percent of people don't even know what Sharia law is." Kidwai noted "that a Sharia council does exist in Wales, but [that it] differs dramatically from a Sharia court. The council gives advice on mundane issues such as inheritance, divorce and mortgages, but has no absolute authority."

I am of the opinion that it is the intention of certain groups in the UK to stir up anti-Islamic feeling  by hook or by crook and will latch onto anything that can instill fear and thus prejudice when what it all really boils down to is inadequate information about what is really taking place. But then the truth is not half as interesting as half-truths!

I'm sure you're wrapped up in the warm cosy glow that 'multi-culturalists' enjoy when espousing their inclusive, liberal and not-at-all-reactionary comments. Perhaps this one time you should check your facts rather more thoroughly and consider that many members of the Muslim community do not want to see Sharia law recognised in this land at all, especially women and if you had done anything more than superficial 'research' you might have known this.

There is no sharia law in the UK, only a sharia court, which is not the same thing. Regards the women who are married to muslims, I was married to one.
