Men and woman of honor.

By Robert Melaccio, sr(25,995) Robert Melaccio, sr

Well certainly the definition of honor states clearly that it applies to a perceived reputation. A person held in good standing, a credit to society and to a profession. One who merits respect and  a symbol of distinction. Usually this person is considered, highly ethical and certainly it all hinges on perception. Now that perception is manifested in two ways. The exterior presentation, the public view, what is projected and of course works. However, in my opinion works are the foundational element. We shall know them by their works and not what they profess. It has nothing to do with the office they hold. While we can respect the office we do not have to respect the person in that office. We extend respect for the office held.

Now we as society usually bestow this respect and honor on people we see as leaders and persons who hold positions and where the attributes defined above are expected, demanded and here is the key, as witnessed. However, in my opinion, we fail to recognize nor accept that when it is not always the case. Rhetorically, should we extend this to our Congress, who presently enjoy a significant disapproval rating, or to the many who hold office who are of alleged dubious character?

Here is a simple example which may sail over many a persons head for consideration.  In today’s St. Petersburg Times in the opinion section they have an article about Credit Card debt. It states that the banks can raise your rates without warning. The one case sited that the rate for a good paying, play by the rules card holder, went from 8% to 24% without warning. Now that person has an "opt out" feature. Meaning they can decide not to use the card and pay at the old rate. Now keep this in mind, you cannot "opt out" if you are in default. That is if you pay an hour after the due time and date. It can be they received your payment after a certain time, although on the due date, but that does not count as well. It is considered a next days teller if after the time set by them. Oh, I guess they forgot to mention that small item? Perhaps they just didn’t know? Now it matters not if the mail was late, you are in default, period, end of story and as my Congresswoman wrote back, "read the fine print on your agreement", a fact. In my opinion it tells me a lot about her character and views and where she stands on many issues that I preceive as moral matters. In fact it speaks to mnay in Congress.

The article further talks about how this could hurt consumers and the economy, no kidding. Do we need to graduate from an elite school to understand this? They say "congress needs to step up before it becomes the next shock to the economy". Next shock to the economy, ok just where have these people been? How do they think many average Americans have been getting along? Now they further state that congress is passing a bill to protect "good paying card holders". They will also educate consumers on how to read the fine print in their contract. Yes, tell them that when their electric is going off and the power company only wants a credit card payment.  Nothing about abusive rates though so one can assume that reflects their beliefs.  So are these leaders entitled to honor and respect?

Now, as I stated, no mention here of people who are a day late or for that matter hours late, who can no longer "opt out" because as I stated above they are now in "default' . Once again, I hear nothing about this and no concern from anyone and certainly no mention of usurious rates of 31% or greater. Nothing about freezing their card and letting them pay down on it at fair rate and not 31% or more plus fees and late charges. It speaks very clearly that these rates are ok with most and certainly our Presidential candidates beliefs and that's a fact Jack as the movie goes. Nothing immoral here now, right? Have you heard one mention of it at all? No and you won't. Yes, in  my opinion that alone says it all.

No, not one care or concern as to why people went into default or the rates charged. Hey they shouldn't borrow, right? Do without, right? Well many of these people were once good payers as they say, who fell on hard times. Why, perhpas a sickness or because their job went to Mexico, Canada, China or India. Yes once good, responsible payers, to use their term, who now came on hard times through no fault of their own. Perhaps having fallen from a good paying job to one now of low wage, go no where abusive jobs that is more like the America today for $7.00, $8.00 or wow, $9.00 an hour.

Hum, let me see, rhetorically can you identify who may have had a hand in bringing this all about? Certainly not those advocating change that you all want to put back into office. Rhetorically are they the ones we know as those fighters for truth, justice and the American way and you consider men and woman of honor? After all they want to bring change to Washington, right?

So if these truly are men and woman of honor, how did you arrived at that opinion? Do you not have a problem with 31% interest on Credit Cards either, yes or no, and do you see that as being immoral? They evidently don't, do you?

Now let us move along to all of us. How do we consider ourselves as men and woman of honor if we do not think this is immoral and support those who knowingly ignore enforcing the law of the land and approving of these rates? Is not allowing illegal workers to enter this nation for years and to steal identity and make but a minor attempt to stop it, not immoral? As professed believers do they not believe in what they profess to? How can they who say they had nothing to do with illegal workers, sanctuary cities, the giving away of our industry and jobs, unfavorable trade deals and who favor foreigners over American citizens in many ways, stand for what many of us are against morally and by faith, who sent off our young to war without sufficient equipment, who let those in Katrina suffer for days, who have still not kept many of the commitments made to us. Yes how do we come to the opinion that they are men and woman of honor?

Rhetorically, why do many support, vote and elect them and how do these who do vote for them think of themselves as men and woman of honor?  Do they or don't they and why? Yes, how do they condone what they have done? The fruit of their labor? How do they reconcile that they are actual accomplices to all that has befallen this nation by nature of their vote or none vote and that’s a fact Jack, as the movie line goes. Don't accept that, well I can understand why you may feel that way. Yet, it does not diminish from the truth in the least. Your works are the manifistation of your acceptance in what you have done or failed to do.

So just how do any of us when we say we stand as professed believers in a specific religion and faith and who opposes abortion, vote for those who would implement it? Now I did not say I was for or against, I just asked if you profess one thing how do you as men and woman of honor condone the opposite?

In my opinion we have evidently and as a nation separated the things of morality and belief from government with some accepted justification that they are separate and distinct in some way.  I see little of morality in any of these deeds and works of our government and leaders and which I believe should be the cornerstone of all law. No, not religious doctrine, morality.  Hey, just an opinion if morality counts at all?

Now one can go down item after item concerning the treatment of average Americans, their financial burdens, Illegal workers, low wages, At Will Employment, Credit abuse, Home Foreclosures and what average and poor Americans undergo at the hands of collection departments, usurious greedy merchants, employers, the sale of inferior products, goods and services, facades of government agencies which in my opinion and by experience immoral. As for politicians who run around the country smiling and promising while they ignoring what they are paid to do they must reconcile their own hearts. I do not have to vote and approve of them nor give them honor for their works which I do not find morally acceptable.

Sorry, in my opinion I see no honor. Sorry, I can only judge them by their works and not what they say, not how they look or their family. No, we shall know them by their works and their works shall set them apart.

Here we are looking at electing our leaders. If we are One Nation Under God as it is professed, why do we not demand the works of God manifest itself in the laws and deeds of those we place in positions of honor?  No this was not meant to inflame, or be insensitive, but to ask the hard questions in my opinion this society does not wish to face. We do know them all by their works. So you either approve or are the same if you continue to return them to office. It can be no other.

Now I expect the language of God to be used by their supporters in their support. The words of God are certainly powerful. However, I tend to look to their works as more definative. In fact Gods Word will support my opinion because my opinion  is founded on it.  Let them stand on that and perhaps if they can answer me with fact as to why 31% interest or more on Credit cards is acceptable and moral, then I might change my opinion of them. Until then I expect little response because honestly, the deeds speak for themselves.

Rhetorically asking,  I cannot understand how people can fill the religious pews but keep the very same moral beliefs they espouse and profess out of their daily lives and not demand them of our leaders? Are we men and woman of honor? The test is in our works and theirs!

Honor is relative and definitions are the bane of philosophers.
