"Forensic teams are set to resume excavation work at a former Jersey children's home at the center of a child abuse probe.

Searches began when a human skull was found at Haut de la Garenne and 160 people have since claimed they were sexually and physically abused there.

Victims have referred to the cellars as "punishment rooms" and said they were kept in solitary confinement with only one or two pieces of furniture and a single light

Police working at the site have excavated one secret underground chamber where many victims have claimed they were tortured and forensic teams believe there could be three more.

During the search police discovered two "significant" items in the first cellar - reportedly shackles and a bath."

This story I feel will get bigger and more grisly as the forensic team carry out their search for more remains.

The reason reading about this sends me cold is an unusual one.

Many years ago, I had a dream about a children's home where the children were systematically abused by the staff who then encouraged other children to abuse younger children in order to protect themselves from further abuse from the adults. It was for this reason that the children never spoke about their abuse. They were forced to abuse in order to protect themselves and in doing so they became guilty and so couldn't claim any longer to be victims. At least this is what they thought. Bear in mind this is just my dream.

This dream was particularly gruesome in it's details, as it did feature dead bodies. In my dream they were floating in an outdoor swimming pool where other children played. I was in the home and managed to escape but other children were sent to bring me back, lest they got punished for my absence.

It was a very vivid dream and one I have never forgotten.

Reading now about this children's home in Jersey brings it back as my lingering feeling after that dream, was that somewhere this was really happening and that thought filled me with fear and dread.

How awful to now see that indeed the stuff of nightmares can be real.
