Rebate Checks A Great Deal for Energy Companies and China.By Mike Fak(17,931) ![]() ![]() Posted Tuesday, March 11, 2008 View All Blog Posts submitted by Mike Fak In the continuing joke of how to waste millions of dollars on nothing, the IRS has now helped pay for a Republican Party ad with taxpayer money. The Internal Revenue Service has just spent $42 million dollars telling us something most of us already knew. Rebate checks will be coming this May or June to middle class taxpayers in amounts ranging from $300 to $1200. For those who live in a bubble of cartoon networks, sports pages and Seinfeld reruns, the news might have been news to them but still it didn’t matter. Those who are eligible will still get their checks whether they know about them or not. Thus we have now spent $42 million dollars explaining the obvious to the informed and wasting ink, paper and postage on those who prefer to live their lives in the protective bubble of news blackout. The letter, which is nothing more than a paid political ad stating how this administration is doing all they can to help Americans in these troubling times shows the hypocrisy of government. Any administration that doesn’t say a word about corporate monopolies which have profits tripling and quadrupling in just two years isn’t really interested in helping common Americans. In fact these rebate checks will help the energy monopolies more than they will us. The real joke in all of this is that the money we will be getting back isn’t our own tax dollars. Those dollars have long ago been misspent on something else. These monies will come from treasury bonds sold to foreign governments such as China. What in effect we are doing is only increasing an already preposterous debt that no country on Earth has ever faced before. A debt that long term will mean we will be servicing a debt of interest greater than what the economy can bear. This quick fix won’t do anything significant to the economy. In a time where heating oil and electricity has skyrocketed across the country, the funds in some cases won’t even offset the increases homeowners have faced this past year. In effect our rebates will go to help increase profits for the utilities that are firmly entrenched with this administration. Perhaps for many the rebates will offset the cost of gasoline as Americans find themselves staring directly at the possibility of $4.00 a gallon gasoline. Here again a personal rebate will help foreign and domestic oil companies make record profits as Middle America gets squeezed even tighter by corporate greed and unconscionable profiteering. Maybe for some the check can actually be used to purchase goods but what sector of products will the monies go towards? Perhaps electronics, or computers, or clothing, or tools that all carry a Made in China sticker on them will ring up on the cash registers. China no doubt absolutely loves this rebate plan. They not only get to collect interest from Americans but also make money off of their exports to us. I’m sort of surprised under the circumstances that the rebate letters didn’t come from the Chinese Nationalist Government since they will end up being the big winners in all of this.
