The song wrings true even today.

By Robert Melaccio, sr(26,175) Robert Melaccio, sr

As the Iraq war news is on the front pages today and we shift from the economy for a moment I was thinking of a song from another time period when people were tired of the politics of that war and how it was being waged. Yes in the song by Creedence Clearwater Revival "Fortunate Son" it speaks to the average American and really people all over this world. As they say in the military, the grunts. The words in my opinion wring out loud and clear even today. It speaks of some born to wave the flag, while the cannon points at others. Yes, they love their fireworks, parades and patriotic events and are usually the first to say strike hard, yet, not with their family, someone else’s. It talks about some born with a Silver Spoon and how they take all they can but when the tax man shows up they play a different tune. Yes and it talks about sending others off to war and how much they want those they send to give of themselves and that there is no end in sight. Yes, a song for that day and forever. That is the fire in the young today, that same fire of yesterday asking why?

Yet can one deny there are not forces in play in this world that hate America and want to see its destruction? To those we should do all we can, all of us united, to defeat them who wish to destroy our way of life if they choose war but offer the hand of peace at all times. We should also understand that there are other forces at work who would use, exploit and take for their own self interests. They work the path of greed and exploitation and the two together create the woe of this world, everywhere. They can be found in individuals, organizations, nations and yes, even religions. Do we not see that at play in Iraq where one religious sect is pitted against the other and even those who are of the same denomination within that religion?

Yes that is the challenge of today. I ain’t no fortunate son or no military son, or I ain’t no Senators son speaks to average Americans, who love their country and will die for it and this is the but that we as average Americans should consider, for what we believe America to be and not as the song says, in someone else’s interests? We should be doing that which is for the common good of all Americans. It is only then that we will be what America stands for. That is not lost on our military but one wonders has it been lost in the circles of power and wealth?

We do not fight for multi national corporations or a one world ideology, or for the rich and wealthy or powerful’s interests, although many who are ignorant of the American psyche do not understand that and see our military as an extension of those and that ideology they hate. No Americans fight for America, our way of life, our belief system, our heritage, our freedom. We do not go to war to concur and hold. In Iraq we bleed and die to give freedom to a people who do not know what freedom is. We can say they were like Americans at the time of our revolution divided, but that is not true in their sense. We were divided by people who supported England and those who forged the new nation. They are divided by hate and religious barriers and for a religion that preaches mercy and love as the finest levels of attainment yet they kill each other. We can talk about Afghanistan but they lived under extreme cruelty and depravation. Their great profit was most merciful to all, as is the God they profess, so one might ask in bewilderment, so where has that gone? One would have to ask them where is the division?

So, in my opinion, I ain’t no fortunate son sings of what average Americans are going through today. Do we fight to win and end this war or do we fight for appeasement, or some other interests or motives? We have to ask the troops on the ground dying and bleeding if they see justice? While they certainly uphold their uphold their honor as men by being there for our nation do they any longer believe in the cause they think or thought they were fighting for? Has it become clouded, and do they feel the reasons are not as clear? Where are the tools for victory provided to them? The additional men, equipment and yes freedom to strike hard and fast and to win, yes in the decisions by those who are in charge and rule?

No if we commit to battle our sons and daughters then we commit to win at all costs. A failure to do that brings on the dissatisfaction, the disillusionment, the anger and frustration that in my opinion is what we have today. We are a fierce competitive nation of people who when we engage want to win. In my opinion to send our people off to war without that conviction is a crime of the highest order. Therefore I hold no ground with any of the candidates on their stance and neither should you. Either win or get out and if these nations do not want freedom, our choice of government that is theirs to decide as we did ours. Support yes, their fight not ours. Want it like we did at Valley Forge,  like we did in our Revolution, they can have it, or like we did in Nam leave it to the one who wanted it the most and has the force of arms and will to win. Is that not the fear you hear from our politicans? Yes, listen my friends, who has the will to want and to WIN.

Yes and when these troops come home torn and bloody do they find help or is there another battle to wage? Yes my friends sadly I believe the song speaks to the point. This is but one issue yet it encompasses what all average Americans face today. It is a key issue along with the economy which this war has a major impact on and it illustrates why these politicians, all of the same flock, have brought this upon us all by their leadership or in my opinion lack thereof. Yes their works go before them, the handwriting on the wall, you shall know them by their works, so why, why, why would we want them to continue to serve?

Are we a nation of honor? If so then there is no discussion. Do we provide what is needed in resources to win, period and finish the job and then bring our people home ASAP? As I said. To continue this fight but do otherwise to win is an affront and a sin in my opinion of the highest order and it is an impact on us all in my opinion because of that lack of will.
