Could we be seeing the last of blockbuster movies?By buckeye(148) I came accross an article that quoted a filmmaker foreseeing the end of the making of blockbuster movies. The Filmmaker? George Lucas. Yes, that George Lucas who made millions off his Star Wars movies. He was quoted in this article saying, "The market forces that exist today make it unrealistic to spend $200 million on a movie...Those movies can't make their money back anymore. Look at what happened with 'King Kong.'" It makes sense though, there have been consistent drops in profits for box office movies. Today, more movies seem to gain more profits off of their DVD sales than at the box office.(But that's a whole other subject for another blog). Lucas also said, "I predict that by 2025 the average movie will cost only $15 million." That seems a little farfetched. He didn't even factor inflation, or the fact that the film industry are going to risks to get the next big hit. A studio is going to take a risk if they think they have the next cult classic, such as Star Wars.
