DVD profits compared to Box officeBy buckeye(148) I want to stick with this ongoing theme on failures of blockbuster movies. Certainly there are many factors that attribute to this. Last time I wrote about the inconvenience of going to the theatre. This time I wanted to focus on the relation of DVD sales to Box office sales. DVD profits have risen compared to Box office revenue in recent years. And its not just a coincidence. According to the site http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_28/b3942101.htm, DVD profits can outweigh the blockbuster profits by a substantial amount. Apparently a DVD can profit $12 a DVD, even if it's sold at low prices. I seen a figure where PricewaterhouseCoopers had sold $18 billion in DVD's compared to $10 billion in box office revenue. In the past DVD retailers would have about a 6 month window from the release of a film in theatres till the release of it on DVD. The problem is that window is closing because of the quick turnover of low box office profits. But in reality its all connected. How many times have you decided not to go to the theatre, instead you'll just wait till it comes to DVD? If the film is gonna get released in next two months doesn't it make your decision easier?
