Lamont, Lieberman, and the Connecticut Senate RaceBy Turek(16) Today in the Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington wrote a great piece on why Ned Lamont is on the way to losing the Connecticut Senate race. After an eye-opening victory against Joe Lieberman in the primary, it appears that Lamont has gained some Democratic “consultants” from D.C., but lost some of the hard-hitting rhetoric that brought him here in the first place. I was thrilled to see Lamont beat Lieberman in the primary, not because I knew a whole lot about Lamont apart from his critique of the occupation of Iraq, but rather because to me, Lieberman symbolizes some of the worst elements of modern American politics. His sense of entitlement (how dare anyone challenge MY seat!) is glaringly obvious. His participation in blatant fear-mongering (from the demonization of rock music to the labeling of presidential critics as unpatriotic enablers of the enemy) is portrayed as evidence of principled leadership and bipartisanship. Sorry, Joe, but as hard as I tried, I could never see you as more than just a greasy politician, and an incredibly self-righteous one at that. It’s simply time to go. The Democratic Party certainly has its own problems, and in itself is no panacea to the nation’s problems. But when weeds infest your garden, you start cleaning it up by plucking the biggest ones first, and Lamont’s spectacular victory over Lieberman seemed like a way to do just that. I have never seen Lamont,, so I can’t really say whether the PR folk have affected his image or charisma, as some claim they have. Perhaps Lamont is not really the right man for the job, and that is the prerogative of the voters of Connecticut to make that determination. All I know is that we deserve leaders who are passionate about serving the common good and act from conviction. We need men and women who will lead this country by inspiration rather than fear, and who will engage in an honest bipartisanship that benefits everyone, not just greasy politicians who will say anything to remain in power.
