Acclaim to the Overseas Chinese Painter of International Repute-Tseng YuHoBy CatherineYen(18,446) ![]() ![]() ![]() private collection Title: How Many Ridges It is difficult to over-emphasize the effect of traditional painting on Tseng's own style. The grace and sophistication of her art is clearly a reflection of her cultured upbringing, and even as she consciously departs from the orthodox, her artistic decisions ricochet off her knowldege of it. In the dsui technique, which she invented, a wide range of traditional techniques are involved, from paper-making to calligraphy; but she has created her own dialogue with orthodoxy by choosing to shun "ink and brush play," while continuing the tradition of landscape painting as an intellectual game of structure and an exercise in spiritual cultivation.
In her work, new dimensions of structure are achieved by "mounting" and "collaging" paper including a material presence foreign to the original paper. Sometimes she also paints on the reverse side for effect. The result is a palimpsest of layered structural shapes which, crystal-like, provide a dimension of density to an already complex depth of field. In the context of traditional landscape painting, this dimension of density is an innovative addition to the rich lore of "cun " texture brush technique. The joy of Tseng YuHo's painting lies in its quiet pleasure in reason and order. Like music, its rigourous structure is concealed by its sensual delights. Tseng has always stressed the importance of method, and has grounded her experimentations in either the theories or the practices of old masters. In today's terms, one can say that her art has taken a deconstructionist path, disassembling the technique and aesthetics of traditional painting into their basic elements, only to rebuild them into a new whole. Tseng YuHo's art is classical as well as personal and contemporary; her paintings challenge the viewer with a fresh perspective, while soothing him with their innate balance and grace. She was born in 1925, in order to acclaim this outstanding artist, her retrospective exhibition will be held in BeiJing National Chinese Arts Museum. She has given us to share in the joy her art brings to so many. p.s.When Tseng YuHe refers to her dsui painting in Chinese, she uses an old seal character that has a hand redical on the left instead of the silk radical, and is thus a pictograph of five hands together.
A bridge to east and west
