Serenade of Green Island- A song of Taiwan

By CatherineYen(18,460) CatherineYen

Scene of Green Island

The "Serenade of  the Green Island" is a song composed by Jou, LangPing (1924-1971) and lyrics by Pan, YingJei,  they collaborated in 1954, and the premier recording was made in the same year, the singer was Tze Wei .  Due to the beautiful melody and lyrics, the song was popularly prevailed in Taiwan, China and all over the south-east Asia countries and appeared as the film music. The 2nd recording by Tze Wei was made in 1958 by Feng Ming Record Company, then in 1961 by Shih Hai Record Company , it became a popular song in campus, society and usually adopted as the performing piece on the stages.

The lyrics describes a young man calls his admiratation and remembrance to a beloved young girl (or vise versa), it's simply depicts a love story.

But due to 50~60 era of Taiwian was a different and difficult period, one sentence of the lyrics--"The green island is like a ship to swim under the moon light " it was mistaken to imply the shaky political situation of KMT, so it was ever prohibited from singing. It is also transmitted incorrectively saying the background story of this song was originated from Green Island, a place confined for the political prisioners, implying the homesickness of the prisioners while they remembered distantly across the sea and headed up seeing the moon and trying to find their beloved home and family...

The mood of this song is sad but peaceful, you may click the following "You Tube" and remember to turn on your speaker to enjoy this song!
