ONE LITTLE GIRL (Tess's Dream)
By beanerywriters(11,675)
Down in the hills of Tennessee dotted with one room shantys po' little Tess lived her pa went off to the coal mine her ma hung washin' on the line. From six rowdy siblings some older, some younger she took some awful ribbin' there was mo' takin' than givin' Barefoot and shy her pigtails would fly as she skipped the dirt road hummin' a tune, she'd dream past noon hopin' for schoolin' real soon. Determined, Tess clenched her fist they'd not laugh, she'd see to that! She dug her feet in the dark earth straightened her back loaded up her backpack and at fifteen, she left "the hollow" to follow her dreams. An education she'd be gettin' worked her way thru school to university graduated summa cum laude, returned to Tennessee with her teaching degree. Her siblings were all grown some with kids of their own, but one little girl, bright and shy tugged her aside, "Pretty miss, teach me my ABC's. . .cause I wanna' be. . .somebody." Tess smiled as she remembered her long ago dream soft as a summer sigh shining thru the child's eyes. . . ---written by Kathleen | |
