Blood transfusions are bad for you - The Jehovah witness's got it right?

Jehovah's Witnesses have long rejected blood transfusions as they are instructed to do so by their belief system and they have been heavily criticised for doing this. This is understandable given that in some cases children have either themselves refused blood or their parents have on their behalf and that decision has resulted in the child's death. Those of us who are not JW's cannot easily relate to how such a choice is arrived at as for many survival is the primary consideration.

I once watched a televised interview where a Jehovah's witness carefully explained from a medical perspective  why foreign blood should not be accepted into the body, and they discussed 'alernatives' that would be equally life saving. See link here for more details re those alternatives.

With my limited medical knowledge the interview did raise a question in my mind about the possible dangers of blood transfusions but more importantly a keen interest in what those alternatives were and how widely available they might be. Should these alternatives be available to all and especially JW's, given that for them denial could mean death?

I do not know if the 'alternatives' are effective in all cases where a blood transfusion would normally be advised, but it is something I will look into more.

Meanwhile, that was a few years ago now, and yet what I read today in the news has shocked me as it appears that medical science has caught up with this view, that blood transfusions can indeed be bad for you.

See the Times Online News Report HERE.

An extract from the report:

"Logically, and medically, patients who need transfusions — those with low blood counts — should benefit immediately from a transfusion of new oxygen-laden red blood cells. Yet many get sicker. Puzzled by the paradox, Stamler and his colleagues decided to look more closely at banked blood — to figure out whether it underwent certain changes that turned it from life-saving in the donor to potentially deadly in the bag.

Their finding, reported this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: nitric oxide (NO). A workhorse of the blood, the gas helps red blood cells ferry oxygen to tissues and props open tiny vessels to allow freer blood flow. It turns out that within hours of leaving the body, levels of nitric oxide in the blood begin to drop, until, by the time donated blood expires after 42 days, the gas is almost nonexistent. "The reality is that we are giving blood that cannot deliver oxygen properly," says Stamler, lead author of the study. "Many patients who are getting blood are being put at increased risk."

"Previous trials have shown that heart disease patients, for example, who receive a blood transfusion to help restore oxygen to deprived tissues, have a 25% chance of having a heart attack and an 8% chance of dying within 30 days; similar patients who do not get transfused have an 8% chance of a cardiac event and a 3% chance of death. Stamler hypothesizes that without NO, red blood cells cannot drill their way into tiny blood vessels; rather, they pile up in narrow passageways, blocking blood flow instead of increasing it and hampering the heart."

It certainly makes you think doesn't it.

This should make you think...

First, the Jehovah's Witness religion was created by a man and his bible study group in the late 1890s. He and his group developed their own interpretation of the bible...which now dictates and controls the lives of so many people.

Now, show me a Jehovah's Witness who has NEVER sinned.

Impossible.

Yet when faced with the choice of whether to allow a life-saving blood transfusion for themself or a family member, they remain loyal to their faith? To a faith based on a mortal man's interpretation of the bible?

Don't tell me that it is God's will to choose death over blood. Life is a precious gift from God.

My family and I have been faced with a split second decision to choose life or death.

I thank God that he gave me the strength to choose life.

This is what the report re medical profession says..again:
"Also from the Times report it says this:
"Previous trials have shown that heart disease patients, for example, who receive a blood transfusion to help restore oxygen to deprived tissues, have a 25% chance of having a heart attack and an 8% chance of dying within 30 days; similar patients who do not get transfused have an 8% chance of a cardiac event and a 3% chance of death. Lots of religions have been built on 'spurious' claims, but this article isn't about religion. It's about medicine.

No more religious commentaries please.

Blood issue at a glance: The Watchtower leadership of the Jehovah's Witnesses say NO blood, BUT they actually DO ALLOW some blood "fractions".
Problem is this variance is so esoteric complicated that by the time special elders appear in the ER with the rule book, the JW patient is at the point of no return, bleeding to death.
NOW,they blame the hospital staff for not having a "cell saver" machine instead of the Watchtower leaders who are responsible for making the rules.

I was born a 3rd generation Jehovah's Witness in 1957 and endured the Watchtower's no blood commandment with longstanding bleeding Crohn's disease. The Watchtower leadership expects followers to die for their dogma and many have. The medical staff get blamed and are 'damned if they do damned if they don't'.

In 20 years there will be artificial blood for anyone who chooses it,putting an end to this drama.

I agree with Gabrielle!! JW did not make anything up it is written in the bible...and it is written very clear!! Why would you give blood if it increases the cause of death and illness!!! This article is correct JW got it right!
